Oud is reputed to be one of the most expensive types of wood in the world. Though technically not a wood, but the resinous fragrant heartwood produced primarily by Aquilaria trees, a fast-growing evergreen tree native to Southeast Asia. Oud is actually a reaction to fungal attacks on the trees. When trees become infected, the secrete a fragrant, protective oil into the heart of wounded areas. Only a few trees per hundred contain the Oud substance.
